https://www.accjapan.org/audio_archives/
Bible Study: The Conflict Over Resurrection and the Teachings of Jesus Christ
This Bible study focuses on the dialogue between Jesus and the Sadducees regarding the "resurrection," based on Mark 12:18-27. By examining the background of the two major factions in Jewish society at the time—the Pharisees, who believed in the resurrection, and the Sadducees, who denied it—we learn the truth of Jesus' teachings on the resurrection. By understanding how Jesus used the "Book of Moses," which the Sadducees recognized as the sole authority, to brilliantly point out their errors, we can renew the hope of our faith.
1 The Sadducees denied the resurrection, angels, and the afterlife. They valued only the Pentateuch (the Law of Moses) and were centered around the wealthy priestly class. Consequently, they did not recognize the passages regarding the resurrection found in the books of Isaiah and Daniel as valid scripture.
2 The Pharisees were the mainstream group with influence over the common people, and they believed in the resurrection, angels, and spiritual beings. They accepted not only the Pentateuch but also the Prophets and the Psalms as the Word of God, creating a sharp ideological contrast with the Sadducees.
3 Although the Sadducees did not believe in the resurrection, they posed a tricky question to Jesus to test Him (Mark 12:23). They asked whose wife a woman would be in the resurrection if she had been married to seven brothers, attempting to expose a contradiction in the concept of resurrection.
4 In response to this challenge, Jesus first pointed out their error: "Are you not in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God?" (Mark 12:24). He taught that in the world after the resurrection, the marriage system of this earth does not continue, and people will be like angels in heaven.
5 Jesus argued using the "Book of Moses," which the Sadducees accepted as authoritative. He cited the words, "I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob" (Exodus 3:6). By stating that God is the God of these figures, He implied that they are still "alive" before God.
6 Jesus concluded, "He is not the God of the dead, but of the living." Although Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob died on earth, they are alive in their relationship with God. This is powerful proof that there is resurrection and eternal life for the dead.
7 This conflict between the Sadducees and the Pharisees is relevant to modern Christianity. There are groups like Evangelicals who believe in the literal working of the Holy Spirit, such as miracles and prophecy, and others who are skeptical. This shows how biblical interpretation shapes various theological stances.
8 August 22, 2026, marked the 5th anniversary of a participant's son's passing. During the grave visit, the participant shared the Christian hope that while the deceased is not physically present, they are with God in heaven, transforming grief into a testimony of resurrection hope.
9 The Acts of the Apostles records Paul claiming before the Sanhedrin that he was being judged for the "hope of the resurrection of the dead," sparking a fierce dispute between the Pharisees and Sadducees (Acts 23:6-8). This highlights how central this theme was in Jewish society.
10 Understanding this historical background deepens the comprehension of the terms "Pharisee" and "Sadducee" in the Bible. Knowing their ideological differences helps one appreciate the intent behind Jesus' words and strengthens the hope of resurrection.
