Summary: From the Debt of Sin to the Gift of Eternal Life

  1. This sermon, based on Romans 6:15-23, explores the profound truth that "the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." It delves into why this message was crucial for early Christians and remains essential for us today. The sermon explains sin as a state of being separated from God's path, a condition inherited by all humanity since Adam and Eve.
  2. The speaker clarifies that "sin" is not just an act but a fundamental state of being separated from God, which inevitably leads to death. As stated in Romans 6:16, we become slaves to whatever we choose to obey: "either of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness." We are born into this state of sin, but through a change of heart, we can become "slaves of righteousness."
  3. According to Romans 6:17-18, believers have been "set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness." This liberation comes from wholeheartedly obeying the "standard of teaching" that was passed down—the Gospel message that Jesus is the Messiah who died for our sins, resurrected, and will return. This is the core of our freedom.
  4. Despite being spiritually renewed, we still contend with the "weakness of your flesh" (Romans 6:19). Our physical bodies are subject to decay and aging, a reality for all people, Christians included. This physical frailty is a constant reminder that while our hearts are changed, our earthly bodies are not yet perfect, urging us to continually strive for holiness.
  5. The sermon contrasts the past life of being a "slave to sin," which produced things we are now ashamed of and resulted in death (Romans 6:20-21), with our new life. Before knowing Christ, we were "free in regard to righteousness." The ultimate end of such a life, disconnected from God, is unequivocally death, a universal consequence of our shared sinful nature.
  6. Now, however, having been "set free from sin and having become slaves of God" (Romans 6:22), we are bearing fruit that leads to holiness. This "fruit" is the evidence of our liberation from the power of sin and death. The ultimate outcome, or "end," of this new life of service to God is clearly stated: "eternal life."
  7. The sermon highlights that the Bible is unique in providing a clear answer to why humanity must face death: because we are all sinners, separated from God from the very beginning. This understanding, which was not as explicit in the Old Testament, was revealed through Jesus and the apostles, bringing clarity to one of life's greatest mysteries.
  8. The phrase "wages of sin is death" (Romans 6:23) is explained using the concept of debt. Sin is portrayed as a debt we owe. The speaker connects this to Jesus' final words on the cross, "It is finished," which can also mean "paid in full." Jesus' death settled the entire debt of sin that humanity could never repay on its own.
  9. While the debt of sin must be paid with death, God offers a "gift" (Romans 6:23). This is not something earned but a free present: "eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." This gift is the complete cancellation of our debt through Jesus, who is the only one capable of erasing the ever-accumulating debt of human sin.
  10. The final result of Christ's payment for our sins is "eternal life." This is the ultimate answer to what remains after the debt is canceled and death is overcome. It is a life in a new reality where death no longer exists. This promise gives believers hope and strength to persevere through life's trials, knowing the glorious future that awaits.
